The legendary Gospel Group, the Gaither Vocal Band is named after gospel legend and leader Bill Gaither. It was the successor to the Bill Gaither Trio. The first song ever to be performed publicly was at a Bill Gaither Trio concert when Gaither and Trio members Bill Gaither and Gary McSpadden formed a quartet with background singers Steve Green and Lee Young. They sang “Your first day in Heaven” to a standing ovation crowd that evening. Originally named the New Gaither Vocal Band, the word “New” was dropped and the group became the Gaither Vocal Band. The word quartet was never used because founder Bill Gaither said that a quartet would limit the number of members and the vocal style that he wanted.
Popularity of this new group soared as the Contemporary beginnings of the group slowly turned to Southern Gospel and a mix of Contemporary Classic tunes.
Today, the Gaither Vocal Band is comprised of Bill Gaither singing bass, Todd Suttles singing baritone and some bass, Adam Crabb singing lead, Wes Hampton singing second tenor and Reggie Smith singing first tenor.
Some of their best known songs include, “No Other Name but Jesus,” featured today. In addition, “Sinner Saved by Grace,” “I bowed on my Knees and cried Holy,” “On the Authority,” “He Touched Me,” “Alpha and Omega,” “Mary, did you know?,” “The King is Coming,” “Because He Lives,” “The baptism of Jesse Taylor,” and many, many more.
